Okay, so, picture this: me, sprawled on the couch, remote in hand, desperately searching for something – anything – to watch. And BAM! Attack on Titan. Again. Yeah, I know, I know, it's probably my fifth re-watch. Don't judge me! There's just something endlessly captivating about those giant naked dudes eating everyone, right?
But seriously, after all these viewings, I started thinking about the first video game adaptation I really dug into: Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom. It wasn't just about button-mashing and hacking away at Titan ankles. It was about feeling like a Scout, soaring through the air with the ODM gear. Which, let's be honest, is probably why we all secretly wish we lived in that horrifying world – for the grapple hooks!
Wings of Freedom pretty much follows the first season (and bits of the second) of the anime. You get to play as Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and a bunch of other familiar faces as you bravely – or maybe not so bravely, depending on how good you are at dodging – fight to protect humanity from being… well, snacked on.
And I gotta say, the gameplay is surprisingly addictive. At first, grappling onto Titans feels clunky, but once you get the hang of it, zipping around the battlefield is a total rush. Imagine Spiderman, but instead of friendly neighbourhood crime, you're slicing the napes of the necks of horrific, grinning giants. Good times!
The main draw? The sense of freedom (hence the title, duh) you get from the ODM gear. It’s not just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about finding the optimal angle, managing your gas canisters, and landing that perfect strike. And when you nail it? Chef's kiss! You feel like a total badass. Even if you accidentally crash into a building half the time... (Hey, we've all been there, right?).

What I Liked (and Didn't Love)
The Good:

- The feeling of using the ODM gear is genuinely fantastic.
- The story follows the anime closely, so it's a great way to relive those early, traumatic moments.
- Slicing up Titans is just… satisfying. Okay, maybe I'm a little messed up.
The Not-So-Good:
- Repetitive missions. Let's be real, it's mostly just "kill all the Titans" over and over again.
- The graphics are a bit dated, even for when it came out. (But hey, it adds to the charm, right?)
- Some characters feel a bit… clunky to control compared to others.
But honestly, the shortcomings are easy to overlook when you're soaring through the sky, yelling "Shinzou wo Sasageyo!" (Even if your neighbours think you're completely bonkers). It's just pure, unadulterated AoT fan service. And I, for one, am here for it.
So, if you're a fan of Attack on Titan and you're looking for a way to immerse yourself in that world (without, you know, actually risking being eaten alive), give Wings of Freedom a shot. Just be prepared for some repetitive gameplay and slightly dated graphics. But trust me, the feeling of soaring through the air and taking down Titans is worth it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go fire up my console and… well, you know. Sasageyo!
