Okay, so, confession time. I started watching Darling in the Franxx because… well, giant robots are cool, right? I mean, who doesn’t love a good mecha anime? But honestly? I stayed for the characters. Seriously. I went in expecting explosions, and I got slapped in the face with some seriously complex and, dare I say, heartbreaking relationship drama. Which brings us to the main point: let's dive into those Franxx pilots, shall we?
The Squad: More Than Just Pilots
Let's start with Hiro, our main dude. Remember him? The guy who couldn't pilot, felt useless, and then BAM! Meets Zero Two and everything changes. He's the relatable protagonist, struggling with his identity and purpose. Plus, he's got that whole "forbidden love" thing going on. Classic. I mean, who hasn't felt a little lost and then had their entire world turned upside down by a pink-haired… well, you know. (Don't tell me I'm alone in that!).
And then there's Zero Two. Ah, Zero Two. Where do I even begin? The iconic horned beauty who's equal parts adorable and terrifying. She's the wildcard, the mystery, the obvious reason why half the fandom tuned in every week. Honestly, her development throughout the series is just phenomenal. She goes from this almost feral creature to someone capable of genuine love and sacrifice. And her backstory? Chef's kiss. Tragic, but compelling.
Beyond the Central Duo
But it's not just Hiro and Zero Two, folks. The rest of Squad 13 is pretty awesome too. We've got Ichigo, the level-headed leader who's secretly (or not-so-secretly) crushing on Hiro. The love triangle drama was real, people! And let's not forget Goro, the best friend we all wish we had. Always supportive, always understanding. Seriously, Goro deserves all the happiness in the world. (Petition for Goro spin-off, anyone?).

Miku and Zorome bring the energy, with their constant bickering and surprisingly deep connection. Think of them as the comic relief... with a side of surprisingly poignant moments. And then there's Kokoro and Mitsuru, whose relationship arc is… well, controversial, to say the least. Let's just say they raise some interesting questions about reproduction and societal expectations. (Seriously, grab your popcorn for those episodes!).
Why They Matter
What makes these characters so compelling is their vulnerability. They're all kids thrust into a war they barely understand, forced to grow up way too fast. They're flawed, they make mistakes, but they're also trying their best to navigate complex emotions and relationships in a world that's actively trying to control them. That's what makes them relatable, even when they're piloting giant robots against alien monsters.

Seriously though, think about it. They're all searching for connection, for purpose, for something to believe in. Isn't that what we're all doing, in a way? Okay, maybe without the giant robots. Unless... (Kidding! Mostly.)
So, yeah, Darling in the Franxx has giant robots and cool action sequences. But it's the characters that really make the series shine. They're the heart and soul of the story, and they're the reason why I, and so many others, got so invested in their journey. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I need to go rewatch the series... for research purposes, of course!
