Now, for those of you who haven't had the pleasure of navigating the French education system (or whose memories are conveniently fading), a page de garde is essentially the title page of a notebook, specifically for CP students. It's not just a place to write your name, oh no. It's a canvas, a declaration, a… well, okay, it’s mostly just a place to write your name. But with style!
But before we dive into the artistic majesty of decorating this sacred page, let's address the elephant in the room, or rather, the bewildered parent in the supermarket aisle, desperately searching for le bon cahier. There are notebooks everywhere! Ruled, unruled, with margins, without margins! It's a notebook jungle out there!
Choosing Your Weapon (aka, the Right Notebook)
Fear not, intrepid shopper! For the CP cahier, you generally want:
- A standard size: Think A4, the size of a regular sheet of paper. Imagine a slightly overgrown index card on steroids.
- Ruled pages: With the big Séyès ruling. This is French-style lined paper that looks like it was designed by a tiny, very meticulous architect. It helps those little hands learn to write properly, even if the letters end up looking like drunken ants doing the Macarena.
- Sturdy cover: Preferably one that can withstand being thrown into a backpack along with a half-eaten pain au chocolat and a collection of suspiciously sticky rocks.
The Art of the Page de Garde
Once you have your trusty notebook, it's page de garde time! This is where the magic happens. This is where creativity is unleashed! (Or, more realistically, where you spend 20 minutes trying to convince your child that glitter glue is indeed a terrible idea.)
What information must be included? This can vary slightly by teacher (they're like snowflakes, no two are exactly alike), but generally, you need:
- The subject: Lecture (reading), Écriture (writing), Mathématiques (math)… you get the picture.
- The student’s name: In big, legible letters. Ideally, they should be able to recognize it later.
- The class: CP, obviously. Unless your child is a genius and skipped a few grades, in which case, congratulations! Buy them a bigger notebook. They’ll need it.
- The school year: 2024-2025, for example. To remind you just how quickly time is flying by.
Now comes the fun part: the decoration! Let your child's imagination run wild! (Within reason, of course. Maybe steer them away from drawing a life-size portrait of the family cat on every single page.) Encourage them to use crayons, markers, stickers, stamps... anything goes! It's their chance to make their notebook truly their own. Just be prepared for the inevitable request to use your good markers. Resistance is futile.
And remember, a perfectly decorated page de garde doesn't guarantee straight A's (or whatever the French equivalent of straight A's is - très bien across the board, maybe?).
